The Quick Guide to Timing Screws Maintenance

Timing screws ensure containers run smoothly through specific packaging applications. As such, they are designed to withstand a good amount of wear and tear. Although made strong, just like anything else, keeping them running takes certain care. Properly maintained screws maximize the efficiency of your project.

We’ve put together six important tips for timing screw maintenance to keep them going for years.

Get quality screws.

This seems simple and obvious but the quality of materials in the timing screw matters. Are the fittings components made from stainless steel or are they fabricated from less durable aluminum stock? Is the plastic timing screw the right material for the containers on the production line? Getting a low-quality inexpensive screw can result in high expenses for production downtime. Spending the right amount of money for the right quality screw upfront will help with maintenance, not to mention, peace of mind.

Visual check.

Optimize the efficiency of your timing screw by making sure everything is in place before running containers through the line, including all timing screw specifications of, rotation, discharge pitch etc. We know downtime is costly and this quick eye check will help prevent any hiccups on the line.

Cleanliness.

Although most timing screws separate the production of containers, it’s important to keep your timing screw clean and debris-free. Anything that may have fallen on your conveyor belt or built on the actual screw could be a detriment to your operation. Making sure the screws remain clean ensures a smooth flow on the production line.

Pay attention to the infeed.

Make sure that the containers are backlogged at the timing screw infeed at all times. This will insure that the containers are placed in the timing screw pockets and not get damaged by the screw threads which could g happen if the containers are not shoulder to shoulder  when entering the screw. A quick check is an easy way to keep the problem at bay.

Understanding the timing screw rotation of your screw is important. To insure you select the correct rotation have a CSS timing screw data sheet available to reference as an easy way to note the proper rotation.

Guide rails opposite the screw are important to good container metering by a feed screw. Make sure that the guide rails are set at the proper elevation and spacing not to damage the screw when the containers are in the screw pockets and that the rails are parallel to the screw root diameter.

The conveyor and screw are designed to work with one another at specific fractions of a second. The timing is set up in a certain way so that the screw discharge is in-sync with the conveyor’s time. Your maintenance service professional can help you understand the correct timing for your project.

Maintenance services.

Timing screws are a repeatable motion designed to keep the containers properly positioned & metered quicker than human hands. However, human support is still needed if a timing screw maintenance issue ever comes up. Be sure your timing screw company offers maintenance support. The company you select should have experienced engineers who are available to consult when production line difficulties are encountered.  Very often a video of the area of disruption in your line can be analyzed by an offsite timing screw engineer and solutions offered.
